Did you know that local search is the most important Internet activity for companies like yours? Here we ran a search for the service “plumbers” in the location “Madison”. Google rightly assumes Madison, Wisconsin, and provides the name, website and phone number for 10 area plumbers (called a 10 Pack),  AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE – RIGHT IN THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE!

Google is now in the Yellow Pages business.

The above example shows what happens if you enter a location along with a keyword category. But what happens if you search on a keyword for a popular local product or service without the location? Let’s see.


As you can see, Google adds a 10 Pack to the search for “dentists” and uses the location of my IP address as the location in the 10 Pack. This means that any search on a product or service can potentially display a 10 Pack. And while this is outside the Golden Triangle, those 10 Pack listing are still the quickest and easiest way for potential customers to find your business. The only question is, ARE YOU IN THE 10 PACK?

Google has put Local Search at the top of the list. You can see it in searches with and without geographic references (do a search for dentists and scroll down). What you see when you do include a geographic reference is a page displaying what is known as Google's 10 Pack. Here's an example:
